Summary

General Standards

- Appropriate survival equipment is required.
- An AOSH first aid kit must be on board.
- A list of survival equipment shall be carried on board with information on how to use it.
- A survival manual appropriate for the season and climate shall be carried on board.
- Crew members shall be trained in accordance with CARs training regulations and standards for your operation.
- The Company Operations Manual shall show how compliance with Section 602.61 (Flights Over Land) of the CARs is to be achieved.

Standards for Maintenance

- 625.86 Appendix C #10 "Survival and emergency equipment shall be overhauled at the intervals recommended by the manufacturer."
- 605.86(1) Maintenance Schedule "...the aircraft is maintained in accordance with (a) a maintenance schedule that conforms to the Aircraft Equipment and Maintenance Standards (Bound by the earliest expiry date of contents)"

Standards for Training

Training for all crew members shall include:
- Survival concepts
- Contents of survival equipment kit.
- How to use the survival equipment carried on board as appropriate for the operation.

Standards for First Aid

The contents of the first aid kit required by Section 602.60 of the CARs shall contain the supplies and equipmentas set out in Schedule II of Part X of the AOSH Regs.

602.61 Survival Equipment Regulations - Flights over Land

For what purpose and for whom:
Must be sufficient for the survival on the ground. of each person on board.

According to given conditions such as:
- The geographical area.
-The season of the year.
-Anticipated seasonal climatic variations.

Must provide means for:
- Starting a fire.
- Providing shelter.
- Providing or purifying water.
- Visually signaling distress.
- A Survival Manual (in standards).

Survival Kit Exemptions:

- An aircraft operating within 25 nautical miles of the aerodrome of departure and having the capability of radio communications with a surface-based radio station for the entire duration of the flight.
- A multi-engined aircraft operating south of 66 30' north latitude, in IFR flight within controlled airspace or along designated air routes.

Summary

- An AOSH first aid kit must be on board.
- Appropriate survival equipment is required.

Suggestions:
- Use the previous ANOs as a guide.
- A literal interpretation invites litigation.
- Follow AIPs.
